A Very Happy Easter
to one and all!

Easter Tradition in Sweden

Easter is a religious holiday and many
of the traditions we still practise
today, originated from Biblical events.
In Sweden Easter is a four day
holiday starting with Good Friday.

We eat a lot of eggs, often decorated,
together with a lot of other good foods.
The food, a smorgasbord, is very similar to
the Christmas table. And just as good!
The house is decorated in yellow and
purple, always a lot of chickens, eggs,
feathers in fresh twigs. The latest tradition
is to decorate a live bush or tree outside your
house with feathers in different colors. This
looks really nice and colorful, together with the
first spring flowers which are blooming at this time.

We do have an Easter Bunny as well,
but he´s called the Easter Hare!
He comes and hides the big Easter eggs,
which the children then look for. One older
tradition is to hide the eggs in the garden,
but due to the weather it´s usually done indoors.
The children dress up as Easter witches
and go "trick or treating".
They give
you an Easter letter (usually a drawing)
and you give them candy in return.

My own personal Easter traditions are not so many,
but for my daughter´s sake I´d like to have a few.
So I decorate a bit in yellow (usually around and on the
kitchen table), have a few chickens, twigs with feathers.

I´ve also decided to get one new Easter item each year,
like a chicken or bunny or a table cloth. I´d love
to have an Easter Penguin....

Of course there´s candy too...Lots of it! Mostly egg-shaped.

We have Easter dinner at my Mom´s as a tradition
and the food is always fantastic! In a year or two I
expect my daughter will go out "trick o´treating" as well.
