ADVENT & LUCIA

Four Sundays before Christmas we start
lighting a candle.
Then we light one each Sunday.
This is called Advent.
It looks like this:
On December the 13th we celebrate Lucia in Sweden.
Lucia was an Italian saint, who was killed because
she was a Christian. This celebration, a procession
of a Lucia and her attendants, is common practice
in the schools, starting at daycare.
Also there are Lucia elections all
through the country - one for Sweden, one for
each region. Lucia is oftened pictured as a
beautiful girl with long, blonde hair.
The Lucia procession sings a number of Lucia songs,
Christmas songs and psalms. Everybody holds
candles and they are dressed in white long gowns.
Lucia herself has a wreath of burning candles
(or electric ones) on her head.
